Bengalis have returned to workplace after Durga Puja,But Bengalis are still in festive mood.So after Durga Puja; Kali puja is the Second biggest Hindu festival,also Known as Shyma Puja,is mainly celebrated in West Bengal on New Moon day during Diwali festivity.Kali puja is dedicated to the Goddess Kali,who is the goddess of Destruction. When Durga is the goddess of Protection and Progression;Kali is basically the other side of the cycle of creation concerning cosmic law of constant transformation.
Whereas the rest of the India worships Goddess lakshmi on Amavasya Tithi during Diwali;The regions of Bengal, Assam, Odisha, specially the North eastern parts of India worships Goddess kali.
Mostly, Diwali Puja and kali puja falls on the same day but in some years Kali Puja comes one day earlier before Diwali Puja. This year, Kali Puja will be celebrated on November 14.
•History of Kali Puja•
The autumn festival ends with Kali Puja and Diwali centring around worship of Goddess Kali and Lakshmi.But Kali Puja was not Celebrated until the 18th Century and it's not an ancient one.
However an annual festival dedicated to the Goddess Kali was introduced in West Bengal by the King Raja Krishnachandra of Navadwip. Kalipuja become popular only in the 19th Century when Raja Krishnachandra's grandson Iswarchandra and many more Elite Bengali land owners (Jamindars) began celebrating in a grand way.
°Along with Durga Puja,Kali Puja is celebrated very elaborately and piously in West Bengal. When it comes to Durgapuja, pandal hopper Bengalis flock to Kolkata and do Pandal hopping through the night and the obvious destination of people is Kolkata. When it comes to Kalipuja the same people rushing to another destination such as Barasat, Madhyamgram and Krishnanagar. These places are popular in West Bengal for Kali puja.
In West Bengal Kali Puja's budgets are mostly equal to the Durgatsav budget. People who didn't enjoy sufficiently during Durga Puja days,still have an opportunity to enjoy during Kalipuja and Diwali season.
